Study Abroad Experience – Arianna Dixon

  • by

Bam. There I found myself, over twenty minutes late, in front of a classroom of 20+ Spaniards, all of whom were older than me, and zero idea as to what the lesson plan for the day was. On my first day on the job, I had not idea what I was getting into, teaching English at a non-profit in Madrid, but I did not expect to step in front of a classroom, alone, the moment that I walked in the door. That day, I had to teach a three hour English lesson, and I would have never made it through that lesson if it had not been for the skills that I had gained from my experiences with A2LP. In front of the classroom, I was able to compose myself, despite being 100% out of my element, and pull of a class that I had no idea I was even teaching. I adapted my teaching style that I utilized to teach Spanish to my third graders, and transformed it to fit teaching English to adults. That day reminded me what teaching was, a continual game of learning and adapting, and A2LP is what helped me present and teach that lesson on my very first day of teaching abroad
